ATTRACTIONS
|
Port Lucaya Marketplace (shopping, dining) - adjacent Rand Nature Centre (animals, birds, gardens) - 4 miles Downtown Freeport - 5 miles International Bazaar (shopping, dining) - 5.5 miles Garden of the Groves (animals, birds, gardens) - 6 miles Lucayan National Park (underground caves) - 18 miles West End (historic town) - 31 miles Grand Bahama International Airport (FPO): Approximate driving time is 15 minutes and distance is 8 miles. Driving directions from Grand Bahama International Airport: Heading out of the airport, turn left and continue to the Welcome Circle. Travel south on The Mall Dr to Ranfurly Circle. Head east on E Sunrise Hwy to Lucayan Circle. Continue on Sea Horse Rd and follow signs to the hotel. Getting there: Taxis are the best way since there is no shuttle service. Fare is $16–$25 USD for 2 passengers plus $3 USD for each additional person. Rental cars and limousines are more than $36 USD. Fees subject to change without notice. Rental cars are available online. Getting around: This location in the midst of shopping, dining, and beach areas makes walking the best option. To get downtown or to the International Bazaar, buses stop at the end of Port Lucaya, about 3 blocks away. Fares are less than $5 USD. Many people zip around on scooters (more than $36 USD a day rental) or bicycles ($5–$15 USD a day rental.) Taxis are convenient and preferable to driving a rental car for those unaccustomed to the British style of driving on the left or to roundabouts. A free government-owned ferry travels daily between Sweeting’s Cay and McLean’s Town. Island-hopping is possible through the mailboats which run weekly from Freeport Harbour to Nassau although they operate on “Bahamas time,” so passage may be slow and space shared with chickens, produce, and cargo. Fares to Nassau are more than $36 USD return. Fees subject to change without notice.

The atmosphere at Pelican Bay is that of a European village, and vacationing families and couples enjoy shopping, dining, and the resort's intimate atmosphere. Amenity highlights: Pelican Bay guests travel by complimentary shuttle boat to a companion marina to enjoy a poolside restaurant. The hotel has two medium-size pools, one with an eight-person spa tub. A third pool with swim-up bar will open in January 2004. Flagstone sundecks furnished with cushioned lounge chairs surround the pools. Guests have access to Atlantic Ocean beaches, more pools, extensive recreational facilities, and a large spa and fitness center at the Our Lucaya Resort next door (fee). The Pelican Bay hotel is a European-style village of three-and four-story buildings with peaked red-tile roofs, earth-tone exteriors, and either white or weathered-wood balcony railings. Buildings are located near the end of a long, narrow waterway called Bell Channel Bay and overlook two marinas and the waterway. Two pools are located at Pelican Bay—a third pool with swim-up bar will open in January 2004. Another pool is available at a companion marina. A complimentary shuttle boat transports guests to the marina, which also has a poolside restaurant. The marina pool is a two-level affair, measuring 120 by 25 feet on the lower level and 40 by 22 feet on the upper level. Complimentary alfresco Continental breakfast is served daily at Yellow Tail's Bar and Grill next to the main pool at Pelican Bay.
